They used it to congeal Saltpeter into pills. For those that are to young to know about saltpeter, it was given to the soldiers and sailors to curb their "urges" while they were away to war. My Grandma was talking about it just the other day. She said the stuff really works but had a slight drawback. There is a time lag between taking it and when it starts to take affect. Grandma said Grandpa was given it during WW2 and it's finally kicking in.
