grew up with rationing and my mom had to save all the cooking fats that was collected once a week by some guy. Remember asking her what do they want that stuff, she said she thought they made bombs out of it.
Well, 18 years later I joined the Air Force as a means to evade the draft, ha, was drafted one week later while in boot camp. My buddies that were drafted back then spent two years living in pup tents, least we had coal heat that we had to shovel, but the butt cans were still frozen in the morning in those WWII barracks that had more cracks than Carter had liver pills.
We had the airborne stationed at our base, I only had to spend a couple of weeks in a pup tent, those were very poor, leaked like crazy and you froze to death, but we were tough, so we were told. Damn military never gave you anything to cover your ears. I don't know how those airborne guys survived in those tents when it got below zero outside. You can get a much better tent today at Wal-Mart for 18 bucks, least they have a floor and screens with a one piece roof that doesn't leak.
Least I found out what they did with my moms grease, they didn't make bombs out of it, that was our food.
