"maybe an over reactive auto immune system"
I agree that this is very possible.
I always thought that clusters could be a unique type of auto immune disorder.
I have friends with rheumatoid arthritis (which can be a very devastating illness) - an auto immune disorder that happens to respond to prednisone, the mother of all anti-inflammatories.
I have friends with Lupus - another auto immune disorder ( my mother in law had it for years ) - which can have a wide variety of symptoms and can be mild or very serious. ( also responds well to prednisone )
Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and
clusters ....Hmmmm?
I know when I am clustering my body is under attack - and if it was attacking itself I would not be surprised.
