Animals really can tell. We had a rottweiler (Chelsea) that we had raised from a baby and she could always tell before we could, that Mike was about to be under seige. She would get upset and leave the room - she hated it. She was a very loving, but very timid dog. We lost her to lupus at the age of 8, sadly.
Now, we have a chesapeake bay retriever (Barly) who hasn't had as much cluster experience as Chelsea did - because Mike's remissions are longer now - but when it does happen, Barly simply won't leave him. It's almost as if he tries to absorb the pain from his dad (Mike). But that's the chesapeake stubbornness I think. The cat, Moxie, usually just watches from afar but as the attack subsides, she tries to comfort Mike in her own meowy way.
The fish simply don't care. But they're like that ;)
