Alice, you can crush most tablets or open capsules and that will greatly increase the speed of absorption. Put the powder in your mouth and chase it with water or mix it in a little water and drink it. You could also chew it. (I have a friend who absolutely loves the taste of aspirin.)
You can buy a pill crusher or put the pill in a piece of Saran Wrap and put it in the door frame and shut the door on it or smash it with whatever. I'm sure there are some other nurses here who have their own methods.
You should ask your MD or (better) pharmacist about a particular med as some are coated because they should be absorbed in the intestinal tract rather than the stomach or are timed-release. (This shouldn't apply to anything you are taking for immediate pain relief but you should still ask.)
