Hi John, for me 1/3 often works if I catch the beast at the start. As far as germs go I have not had a problem by wiping the needle with a alchol pad and just putting the rubber cap back on. Then put it back in the plastic container to keep it out of the light. The doc said this was O.K. since I am the only one using the needle. Hope it works for ya....Gord
