Migraine Misery:
The Agony of Cluster Headache
For Immediate Release
Ann Arbor, Michigan, June 28, 2001- On Wednesday, June 13, Dr. Joel Saper
made his fourth appearance on "Good Morning America". The ABC morning show
featured a patient who suffers from cluster headache and was successfully
treated at the Michigan Head.Pain & Neurological Institute, in Ann Arbor,
where Dr. Saper is the Director. The story covered the severity of cluster
headaches, a serious, painful headache disorder that has at times resulted
in suicide. Mr. Dan Skopek, one of the institute's patients, was featured
in the interview at his home with his family.
Cluster headache is perhaps the most sinister of the well-recognized
headache disorders. Few headaches surpass its ability to cause panic, rage,
and serious thoughts of self-destruction, and few headaches challenge a
doctor's knowledge, compassion, and treatment skills more than cluster
headache. "Patients will often cry or scream or pace or pound their heads
or their fists against the wall," stated Dr. Saper. "It's a devastating and
torturing experience."
The term "cluster" was first used to describe the clustering or
sequence of bouts of painful attacks (lasting about an hour each) that occur
from weeks to months at a time and then stop spontaneously. Up to 8-10
attacks may occur per day, frequently during the night or during restful
periods. The headache cycle may return months or years later. These
"cycles" are most common at the beginning of spring or fall, but they can
occur at any point during the year. Most people with cluster headache have
blue or hazel-colored eyes and characteristically exhibit similar personal
and life habits and behaviors.
If you are interested in obtaining more information on cluster
headaches, or would like to interview Dr. Saper or a patient who suffers
from cluster headache, please contact Joel Cook at (734) 677-6500,
extension 208, or via email at jhcook@mhni.com.
