Verapamil is the generic ("chemical") name of the drug. Calan is a brand name under that Verapamil is sold.
But there are few more brand names for this generic:
Akilen, Anpec, Apo-Verap, Arpamyl LP, Azupamil, Berkatens, Calan SR, Calaptin, Calaptin 240 SR, Cardiabeltin, Cardiagutt, Caveril, Civicor, Civicor Retard, Coraver, Cordilox, Cordilox SR, Corpamil, Covera-Hs, Dignover, Dilacoran, Dilacoran HTA, Flamon, Geangin, Harteze, Hexasoptin, Hexasoptin Retard, Hormitol, Ikacor, Ikapress, Inselon, Isoptin, Isoptin Retard, Isoptin SR, Isoptine, Isoptino, Magotiron, Manidon, Manidon Retard, Novo-Veramil, Praecicor, Quasar, Rapam, Robatelan, Securon, Univer, Vasolan, Vasomil, Vasopten, Veracaps SR, Veracor, Verahexal, Veraloc, Veramex, Veramil, Verapin, Verapress 240 SR, Verdilac, Verelan, Verelan SR, Verelan PM, Verpal, Verpamil, Vetrimil
This example should make it clear, why it is desirable to not only state the brand name, but the generic too.
