...if August were a Native American, or could demonstrate that somewhere in her heritage she had a Native American ancestor, it would not be illegal. Native Americans have the legal right to harvest, consume, and even grow peyote and/or mushrooms. As a matter of fact, anyone, regardless of their heritage, who chooses to join the Native American Church enjoys the same legal right.

People with other medical conditions, such as glaucoma and MS, can legally consume marijuana.

In England, junkies can legally obtain heroin. In the United States, junkies can legally obtain Methadone.

People with a medical history of schizophrenia, clinical depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder can legally be prescribed LSD, DMT, and MDMA, which is commonly known as Ecstacy.

Repeat sexual offenders have been treated with ketamine, commonly known as K, or Special K.

People with eating disorders can legally be treated with methamphetamine, commonly known as speed.

Certain types of eye surgery, and nose and throat surgery, are routinely done with cocaine as the anesthetic, since the synthetic versions such as procaine or lidocaine don't work well enough.

Where I live, it is perfectly legal and very common to use paregoric to treat stomach cramps. It is available without a prescription. Paregoric is nothing more than opium dissolved in alcohol.

In Canada, it is possible to buy tablets containing codeine in any drugstore without a prescription. I was astonished to find that this is not possible in the United States.

If he chose to, August's doctor could write her a prescription for psilocybin or psilocin. The fact that there is no drugstore nearby that could easily fill the prescription is irrelevant.

I don't know if you are a victim of cluster headaches yourself, Judi. I suspect you are not, or you would not be so quick to criticize. If you are one, then you have my apologies, but I ask you to think about this: It is illegal to sell, give away, or consume Imitrex without a prescription. How many of us have given Imitrex to a fellow clusterhead in need? I know I have, and will again.

And, let's face it, as someone else said here recently, what is a prescription but a note from a doctor saying, "Hey, I saw this person for ten minutes once in my office, and I don't THINK she will abuse this otherwise illegal substance or give it to anyone else, so go ahead and sell it to her" ?

Besides, if the researcher in Montana who contacted Flash recently about his (the doctor's) proposed study gets his authorization, and I see no reason to assume he won't, there will soon be yet another legal source of psilocybin for cluster patients. I am sure Doctor Russo would be delighted to find subjects for his study. I intend to be the first one in line.
