It was common in the Middle Ages, roughly around the Germanic countries, during winter when villages were totally isolated from each other. If the rye grain, (for bread) went mouldy there'd be trouble. People went on pilgrimages to get a cure, (so I hear) but in fact they just needed to get far enough away from their own village to be able to start eating someone else's bread!!
