Elaborating on my Fred Flintstone theory (no, I wasn't just being a wise-ass), when you have sudden, intense pain inflicted on you (like dropping a bowling ball on your toe) you instictively jump around and yell -- you don't think "Gee, that's pretty painful, maybe it would feel better if I hopped around on one foot screaming!". The thing with clusters, is they're not quite that sudden (at least not for me), so I think you kind of wait until they hit that level of pain, then you give up self-control and let your instinct to move take over. I know I try real hard to stay still as long as I can, hoping I can rest through the whole thing, but I always fail, giving in to an overwhelming urge to move.

I imagine the instinct is a mechanism to create a diversion from the pain. But I certainly don't rule out your impatience idea -- I know I can't wait to get rid of each and every attack. I think anxiety is also a factor in pacing, at least for me.
