There is no dought that the freedoms we enjoy here in the U.S. also allow alot of criminals to get off scot free, murderes to be found innocent, races being supressed for decades....But the same freedom lets us think in grand ways without fear of being squelched, without fear of being un-conforming....We have somehow managed to think up a way to leave our planet and set foot on our Moon...and come back to Earth in one piece....its that culture we enjoy of "nothing is impossible" that is a direct consequence of these freedoms...even if it means we all have weapons around to protect us from those who abuse them. I personally would rather live here than in some place where I am not afraid to come up with some bizarre idea or to say anything contriversial.
When it comes time to leave Earth because our Sun is approaching the end of its energy supply, I hope we have figured out a way to traverse to another hospitable planet in our universe, BEFORE our Sun goes Supernova...This might involve some exotic engine technology, a way to manipulate the mathematics of the fabric of space-time....the survival of the human race demands it. And when we do figure out how to get there, it will be because we were not afraid...3000 years before, to think in grand ways. In order to do this we need a place where freedom allows this way of thinking to flousish...I believe I am living in that very place.
