I had root canal in 1983 and month later dentist instaled caps that were longer than old teeth.Some trouble month latter, but real trouble started year latter.Went to Mayo clinic after all the tests ,all they could say was nerve was pinched by something in jaw (they thought it was blood vessel in jaw). Every time nerve get irritated and swells it pushes on blood vessel
that gets more iritated and it a cycle that keeps going .Fianally I had New dentist grind caps down a lot and it cut down pain.
