Not a docotor here. I think they are absorbed much faster, and/or bound more tightly to RBC's than O2 by their intrinsic chemical characteristics. As noted in a reply to your post, they are both vasodilators, although both can be vasoconstrictors, depending on their plasma concentration and stage of the onset of their effect. Because of the blood-brain barrier, I think it is unlikely that they exit the blood stream other than perhaps absorbed by fat tissue. I think that although important that some commonalities may exist between vasodilator's effects on CH episodes, perhaps, at least to me, is why only one small area is affected since these two agents, as well as other triggers, have systemic effects as well, i.e.: Why doesn't our bicep hurt too during an episode of CH? same receptors, same causing agents, etc...
I am just looking at it backwards to see if it makes more sense...cuz I had it with these CH attacks.
