The real support she gives is in not letting this THING rule our lives. We try to make the most of the pain free times in compensation for the bad lost times. I think we have to be alone with the pain because it requires our total concentration to withstand it. Any distraction--even a kind word--can infuriate me when I'm trying to "contain" the pain.
