The rules are posted at clusterheadaches.org under bylaws. They have been voted on and adopted by the Board of Directors.
You're absolutely correct in that OUCH is a not for profit organization. All monies collected in dues, gifts, grants, etc. will go back into benefiting cluster headache sufferers. OUCH will never turn a profit on it's operations. There are expenses incurred in operating the organization, stationary, postage, web site operation, etc. For now, the only way to raise that money is to collect dues. Perhaps in the future we will have a large enough base of contributors (drug companies, etc) that we will not need to ask for dues. This first year is kind of a feeling out year. We need to see how well we can operate within our proposed budget. We need to see how the funding of the convention goes and will OUCH need to pick up some of those costs. A lot of questions which will be answered in time. OUCH is a dynamic organization and will evolve as time goes on. Who the heck knows what the final product will look like.
I will offer that if anyone can't afford the $25 and really, really wants to be a member of OUCH, drop me an e-mail. I have a feeling there will be others that are willing to pony up the dues for the ones that can't afford it. I'll keep it all as confidential as possible.
