Been thinking about the social injustice of some of our fellow suffers not being able to get the meds they need due to lack of insurance and financial considerations, etc. Some people have posted that they are willing to 'share' their supply of meds, despite the illegality of this. My question:
IS it illegal? If person X has a legally obtained supply of a prescription medication and gives some or all of it to another person, HAS a crime been committed and if so, what crime? Does interstate shipment of this prescription medication come into play here? Is there a difference between 'controlled substances' and 'regular prescription meds'?

I'm aware of the other dangers of doing such a thing---med should not be taken without medical advice and if something did happen to the 'taker' the 'sender' might be at risk of liability, but for now I'm just interested in the actual legality of 'donating' prescription meds.

Thanks.
T
