The level at which lithium "works" is just below the level at which it has toxic affects. Also, it takes one or two weeks to reach that level in the blood. Therefore, it does require several tests to determine and monitor this level. While those sound like negatives, lithium does appear quite affective and there is a host of long term usage data for lithium.
