lingering attack unusual?

I had annual bouts with CH from 1981 to 1995. This year it's returned, with a twist:Always in the past the attack would strike at the appointed hour, run its course, then drain away completely. In this cycle, however, the attack diminishes in intensity but never goes away completely, and for most of the day I am essentially non-functional. Is this unique or common -- and, if common, what can I expect?
