I haven't tried the Vicks, but have had great success with Capzasin on the back of my neck to relieve the tension that comes with the headaches. I recently tried a liquid version with an applicator that lets you apply it without getting any on your hands (a very good thing).
In the past I tried it in the nostril as was recommended as a preventative - didn't seem to work. One word of advise: don't try it in the nostril if you have a cold or allergies! I made this mistake and then was dumb enough to lay down on my back, allowing the Capzasin and the drainage to go down my throat. I thought my throat was on fire! Many, many glasses of water later it was better, but a quite uncomfortable (and startling) experience.
